Perfect Trip: Hikes and Relaxing Time This was an incredible experience. Each hike always had an amazing ending, in terms of views and in terms of places to stay. Our guide (Herbert) is a fantastic person and would recommended him with my eyes closed. He was always looking out for us and making sure everything was smooth and ready. This trip is the perfect balance between challenging hikes and relaxing time. Peruvians are one of the best people I’ve met and made our trip memorable. The food, traditional and fantastic. I would recommend to make the reservation with at least two months in advance, so that the reservations (restaurants, hotels, and transportation) are all ready and aligned. We did the reservation with three months and it was perfect.

Great trek, thanks Hector! We had an amazing track alongside Pat towards Machu Picchu. The scenery was amazing as was the food, but the experience was made a lot better by our guide Hector and the team at IPT. While the track was difficult at times Hector was very accommodating and encouraging. Hector provided lots of information about the Incas and his passion for the history was great to experience. Highly recommend this trek!!

Excelente experiencia.!!!

I heartily suggest Incredible Peru Tours. Using Incredible Peru Tours, my companion and I reserved two tours: Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Prior to making a reservation, we discovered that they were really organised and helpful. Every little detail was meticulously handled by Fredy, and communication with him was a breeze. Considering everything we did, both excursions were excellent and incredibly affordable. Luis, our guide, is incredibly kind and informed. Since our time in Cusco is extended, we will most likely do another tour with this company. To anyone travelling to this stunning nation, I heartily suggest Incredible Peru Tours.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions About Salkantay

What is the highest point of the route, and what can I expect there?

The highest point of the route is Salkantay Pass (4,630 m / 15,190 ft above sea level), located in front of the impressive Salkantay mountain. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Andes and experience one of the most memorable moments of the trek.

Because of the altitude, you may feel tired, short of breath, or very cold, so it is recommended to walk at a moderate pace and be well acclimatized before starting the route.

Cell phone reception during the Salkantay Trek is limited. Some sections of the route may have coverage, especially near communities or areas with better connectivity, but there are several remote stretches where there is no signal.

It is recommended to inform family or friends before starting the trek and download any important information in advance so you can access it offline.

In the event of a medical emergency, the guide will assess the situation and provide the necessary first aid. Trekking teams follow protocols to handle common issues such as altitude sickness, injuries, or other discomfort during the hike.

If necessary, an evacuation will be coordinated to an area with access to transportation and medical care, using the available means depending on your location along the route.

The Salkantay Trek has a moderate to challenging difficulty level due to the altitude, long hiking days, and changing terrain. You do not need professional mountaineering experience, but good physical condition and prior preparation are recommended.

It is recommended to spend at least 2 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the trek so your body can gradually adapt to the altitude.

Proper acclimatization helps reduce the effects of altitude sickness and allows you to enjoy the experience more comfortably.

The best time to do the Salkantay Trek is generally between May and October, during the dry season, when trail conditions are usually better and there is a greater chance of clear skies.

From November to April, it is the rainy season, so you may encounter rainfall and wetter trails, although the route generally remains operational.

Temperatures can change significantly due to the different ecosystems along the route. At Salkantay Pass, temperatures can be very low, especially in the early morning, while the climate becomes warmer and more humid as you descend toward the cloud forest.

It is recommended to wear layers so you can adapt to temperature changes throughout the day.

It is recommended to bring suitable clothing for cold and rainy conditions, trekking shoes with good grip, a comfortable backpack, sunscreen, a hat, gloves, a reusable water bottle, personal items, and any necessary medications.

Trekking poles are also recommended to improve stability during ascents and descents.

Advanced trekking experience is not required, but it is important to be prepared to walk several hours a day over uneven terrain and at varying elevations.

Doing some hikes beforehand and maintaining good physical condition will help you enjoy the route more.
